Questions people ask

How does compound interest work?

Interest is added to the balance, and the next period's interest is figured on the bigger balance. Banks quote an APY that already includes compounding, so enter the APY as shown on the account.

What is the average savings account rate?

The FDIC national average across all banks is shown in the note above, and it is low because most money sits in big-bank accounts paying almost nothing. Online high-yield accounts pay several points more. That difference, over years, is what the "national average" box is there to show.

Why the inflation line?

A balance that grows slower than prices is shrinking in what it can buy. The "today's dollars" column discounts the future balance by the inflation rate you set; the button loads the current CPI reading from the finance desk.
