Rules of thumb
- Reserve caps: most captive and bank programs cap the markup at 2 to 2.5 points (CFPB consent orders pushed many to flats). Credit unions often pay flats of 1 to 2%.
- Disclosure: products are optional and must be priced separately on the buyer's order; several states cap GAP (e.g., at 5% of amount financed) and require pro-rata refunds on payoff.
- Menu selling: the payment difference per product is the number customers decide on; the "life of loan" figure is what they actually pay. Both are shown.
- Chargebacks: reserve is charged back on early payoff within 90 to 180 days; product cancellations reverse the gross. Reserve carried on a 72-month loan rarely survives the average 40-month life.
