Recall lookup
Every open safety recall for a year, make and model, or for your exact car by VIN, live from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Repairs for safety recalls are free at any dealer for the brand.
By year, make and model
By VIN
The VIN is decoded by NHTSA's vPIC service into year, make and model, then the recall list for that vehicle is shown. For the definitive "is my exact car affected and already fixed" answer, finish at nhtsa.gov/recalls, which checks the VIN against the manufacturer's completion records.

What to do if you find one
- Note the NHTSA campaign number (format 26V123000).
- Call any dealer for the brand and give them the VIN; they check completion and order parts. The repair is free.
- If the recall says "park outside" or "do not drive", follow it; ask the dealer about a loaner or towing, which many manufacturers cover.
- If parts are not available yet, you get an interim notice; put a reminder in your calendar for 60 days.
- Buying used? Run the VIN before you sign. Dealers may sell used cars with open recalls; new cars cannot be delivered with one.
