Cutting the premium

  1. Re-quote every renewal. Loyalty is priced in; the same driver gets quotes 50 to 100% apart.
  2. Raise the deductible to $1,000 if you could cover it; it usually trims 10 to 20% off collision and comprehensive.
  3. Drop collision on an old car once the car is worth less than ten times the collision premium (see the depreciation calculator).
  4. Credit score matters in most states; the same tiers that set your loan rate set your premium.
  5. Telematics programs give 10 to 30% to drivers who do not brake hard or drive at 1 a.m.; the catch is the data.
  6. Before buying, check the car itself: some models cost twice as much to insure as others in the same class.
