Gold & the economy
Forever is realmless: one auction house per ruleset per region, which means more sellers and more buyers than any Classic realm ever had. Prices will be lower for mats and more stable for finished goods. The two gold sinks you cannot skip are riding at 40 (100 gold) and 60 (1,000 gold).
What to budget
| Level | Need | Cost | Where the gold comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | Spells every even level, a 6-slot bag or two | 5–10 gold total | Quest rewards and vendoring greys; sell cloth and leather on the AH instead of vendoring |
| 20–40 | Spells, bags, the riding fund | 100 gold for riding at 40 plus about 60 gold of spells | Gathering professions sold raw; quest gold climbs from 20 silver to 2 gold per turn-in |
| 40–60 | Spells, Dual Spec at 40 (10 gold), consumables, the epic riding fund | 1,000 gold for riding at 60 | Herbs and ore at 225+ skill, dungeon BoEs, cooking and first-aid mats; quest gold reaches 5–7 gold per turn-in in the 50s |
| 60 | Raid consumables, repairs, crafted gear | 20–50 gold per raid night | Dire Maul tribute, Stratholme and Scholomance BoEs, Felwood and Plaguelands farming, daily-style Legacy rewards |
Auction house rules of thumb
- Never vendor cloth, leather, ore or herbs. At launch everyone is leveling professions; raw mats sell within minutes.
- Post in stacks people craft with: cloth in 20s, leather in 10s or 20s, ore in 20s, herbs in 5s and 20s.
- Undercut by a copper, not 20%. With one AH per ruleset the market is deep; the cheapest listing sells first regardless of margin.
- Sell at prime time, buy at 4 a.m. Evening listings clear; night listings from bots and farmers are the cheapest.
- Deposit is lost if it does not sell. 12-hour listings for mats, 48-hour for BoEs and recipes.
- Auctionator (Forever build available) shows the cheapest unit price and lets you post with one click; see the addons page.
Professions that pay early
| Pair | Why it pays | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Skinning + Mining | Pure gathering: no training cost, everything sells, Mining nodes along every leveling route | Anyone who wants the 40 mount on time |
| Herbalism + Mining | Herbs for Alchemy leveling plus ore for Blacksmithing and Engineering; the highest raw income at 50+ | Druids, Hunters, anyone kiting through zones |
| Skinning + Leatherworking | Devilsaur and Black Dragonscale pieces are pre-raid gear everyone wants; Hide of the Wild sells to every healer | Rogues, Druids, Hunters, Shamans |
| Herbalism + Alchemy | Potions and elixirs sell to raiders every week; Arcanite transmute cooldown is pure profit | Casters, raiders on a budget |
| Enchanting (with gathering) | Disenchanting dungeon greens; Crusader and the +healing enchants are launch-week money | Mages and Warlocks who dungeon |
| Tailoring | Robe of the Archmage, Robe of the Void, Truefaith Vestments: three pre-raid chests on the gear lists | Mages, Priests, Warlocks |
| Engineering | Costs gold, makes none until 60; buy it for the toys and the Force Reactive Disk, not for income | Tanks and PvP |
Per-class profession picks and the 1–300 skill routes are on the professions page. Forever adds 600+ recipes and Blueprint recipes from dungeon bosses; those markets do not exist yet, so the first crafters to learn them will set the prices.
