Cutting the bill
- Buy the cheap-to-own badge, not the cheap sticker. A $3,000 price gap is erased by the maintenance gap between a Toyota and a Volvo inside six years.
- Independent shops charge 20 to 40% less than dealers out of warranty; keep records for resale.
- Tires and brakes are half of years-6-to-10 spending on mainstream brands; buy by test rating, not price.
- Luxury brands cost more for the same part plus labor; a used German car at 60% of MSRP still carries 100% of the repair bill.
